Why do thermometers and thermometers use mercury to measure temperature?

maru

Mercury thermometers and thermometers utilise the property of mercury to expand when warmed. (Expansion is the increase in the volume of an object when its temperature rises.) When measuring body temperature, body heat is transferred to the thermometer and the temperature of the mercury in the thermometer rises, causing the mercury to expand. The thermometer's scale is written in accordance with the expansion of the mercury, so you can tell your body temperature.
